Figure Ground Perception

It’s an ability to identify the foreground from the background in a visual presentation. Impairments in this area of visual perception may interfere with identification and locating specific pictures, symbols, letters, numbers or words in a book, a map, a classroom board, or on other visual material.


  • Child may struggle with writing and reading activity if he has poor visual figure ground perception skill if he represents following behaviors.

  • Child shows a poor ability to quickly localize a specified word or sentence on a page.

  • Child display confusion and fatigue quickly when looking at busy visual displays or pages.

  • Child has difficulty copying from one source to another, (from blackboard to notebook)

  • Child has difficulty with hidden picture activities.

  • Child struggles when finding objects in a drawer.
