Form Constancy:

It is a particular visual perceptual skill which enables us to identify and label the particular object when presented in different angle, context, environment, color, texture, size etc. A child with a good Form constancy skill enables him to interpret the object, numbers, letters, words etc. accurately no matter how they are presented (for example letters on black board, books in different font types, rotated, larger or darker etc.)

A child may have poor form constancy skills if:

  • He has trouble building a toy of blocks or putting together a puzzle based on a picture.

  • He has trouble judging distances and heights.

  • He doesn’t find missing items quickly, even if they are in plain sight.

  • He has trouble reading cursive handwriting or unusual fonts.

  • He struggles to recognize objects when placed in a new location.

  • He doesn’t always recognize familiar places or objects in photographs.
