What is school readiness?

School readiness skills refers to those skills which enable a child to make an easy and healthy transition from a little bit pampered homely environment to the school which will be bigger social environment where the child will have to survive without help of his/her parents.

Now if you are thinking everyone goes to school, we all went to school what’s the need to look at it as separate issue… Our children have born in the era which is dominated by the screens and gadgets. Though this technology has improved lifestyle greatly, but it has also affected mental and physical health to certain extent. Don’t we have some common complaints from our kids…

Why can’t he sit at one place… he keeps on running everywhere… doesn’t he get tired…

He can eat only when he watches TV or mobile…he sits quietly only when he is watching mobile…

I don’t know why but I feel he is lacking behind as compared to other children of his age…

He started speaking late… He hates holding pencil… he never seems to listen what his teacher is saying… He will never listen what is being said at once…

Do you think these all the complains just related pampered parenting style or do they softly trying to signal something else…?

Our technology dependent lifestyle is definitely interfering normal developmental growth of our kids. So, it has become a necessity to take this complains seriously because school readiness skills are not just about writing their name, counting to 10, knowing the colors. school readiness skills actually refer to a much broader range of skills. In addition to some academic basics, school readiness skills also include self-care (independent toileting and opening lunch boxes), attention and concentration, physical skills (e.g. having the endurance to sit upright for an entire school day), emotional regulation, language skills, play and social skills.

Why are school readiness skills important?

The development of school readiness skills allows school teachers to expand and further develop a child’s skills in the specific areas of social interaction, play, language, emotional development, physical skills, literacy and fine motor skills. Without these basic skills already established upon entry to school, children can very quickly find themselves playing ‘catch up’ compared to their peers that are advancing more quickly. Students that begin school with the build block (or foundation) skills in place advance quickly as opposed to those that start school only to then begin the slow process of developing school readiness.
